GRAMMAR-TRANSLATION METHOD (GTM)

Grammar Translation Method (GTM) is a very traditional and classical method in our country. And most of the schools of our country apply this method. In this method a teacher is the main communicator of a classroom. All the activities and classroom tasks are given by teacher and student just memorize those and give examinations. The Grammar Translation Method can help the studentfamiliar with many vocabularies in foreign language, especially English.

The Grammar Translation Method is a method of foreign language teaching which uses translation and grammar study as the main teaching and learning activities. The grammar Translation method or classical method emerged when people of the western world wanted to learn “foreign” languages such as English. It is focus was on grammatical rules, the memorizing of vocabulary and of various declensions and conjunctions, translation of the text, doing written exercise.

The method is very much based on the written word and texts are widely in evidence. A typical approach would be to present the rules of a particular item of grammar, illustrate its use by including the item several times in a text, and practice using the item through writing sentences and translating it into the mother tongue. The text is often accompanied by a vocabulary list consisting of new lexical items used in the text together with the mother tongue translation.
